Operating systems

See the operating model in use.

These are published Notion systems I built. They expose the business entities and relationships; a client Installation also adds the integrations and control appropriate to the real business.

Workflow builds · design examples

The handoff has a before and an after.

These illustrations show the kind of operating layer an Installation can produce. They show proposed designs; the examples are illustrative.

Before · carried by people

A customer signs.

  1. The agreement lands in an inbox.
  2. Someone copies the customer details into the CRM and creates a project.
  3. Operations gets an email and makes the folder and tasks.
  4. A required detail is missing. Sales has to ask the customer.
  5. Someone remembers to check again Thursday.

The process moves when a person carries it.

After · a designed operating layer

The signature starts the work.

  1. The customer and project state update in their appropriate systems.
  2. Documents are filed and routine tasks appear with owners.
  3. Operations receives the information needed to begin.
  4. Missing details create an exception with an accountable person.
  5. A completion check confirms the handoff is ready.

People handle judgment. The system carries the routine work and checks the handoff.

Illustrative workflow design. The exact tools, checks and exceptions follow the business.

Another example: a completed job reaches billing

Before

The crew finishes. A message reaches operations. Somebody checks the job record, finds the changes, asks for approval and reminds accounting to invoice.

After

Completion updates the job state. Required sign-off and chargeable changes are checked. A billing queue exposes ready work; missing information goes to an owner. Reconciliation reveals completed jobs still waiting for an invoice.

Accounting remains authoritative for the invoice. People retain approval over consequential changes.

Business Nervous System Reads

Follow the reasoning.

These four composite demonstrations use fictionalized businesses to show operating evidence, the five functions and what I would change first.

Information exists across the company. Assembling a reliable picture still depends on a person.

Software and automation

Inspect the architecture behind the promise.

The public systems above demonstrate the operating model. The Architecture & Stewardship Standard specifies the implementation discipline: ownership, failure visibility, completion states and responsible handoff.

A business workflow often contains private information. The public examples here expose the method without presenting fictional outcomes as client proof.

Other things I’ve built

I also ship software people can play.

Brand New Colors is my browser-game studio. The games model specific worlds closely enough to make their rules playable.

Houston Custom Wood Shop lets a player run a furniture business, price work and contend with capacity. It is one example of the software I build outside the consulting practice.
